Dochula Pass, located about 30 kilometers from Thimphu on the road to Punakha, is one of Bhutan’s most scenic mountain passes. At an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,200 feet), the pass offers stunning panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayas, including peaks such as Masanggang, Kangphugang, and Terigang. On clear days, the vistas are particularly breathtaking, providing an ideal backdrop for photography and sightseeing.

The pass is famous for its 108 memorial chortens known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens. These were built under the patronage of Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck to honor the Bhutanese soldiers who died in December 2003 during military operations against Assamese insurgents from India. The chortens are arranged in three concentric layers, creating a serene and powerful memorial site.
Adjacent to the chortens is the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang, a temple constructed in 2008 to commemorate 100 years of the Wangchuck dynasty and Bhutanese monarchy. The temple’s walls are adorned with murals depicting significant events in Bhutanese history, blending traditional artistry with modern elements.
Dochula Pass is also known for its vibrant Dochula Druk Wangyel Festival, held annually on December 13th. This festival, featuring mask dances and cultural performances by the Royal Bhutan Army, celebrates the victory of the Bhutanese forces and the leadership of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The festival is a unique cultural experience, offering visitors a deep dive into Bhutanese traditions and the country’s military history.
